Organic Living

Organic living is a way of life that allows us to do our bit to keep the environment pure and natural. Organic living helps us keep ourselves fit and healthy too. And, organic living can help our wallets - we can save money by living organically.

Here's some of the things you can do to help yourself live organically.

Create a Compost Heap

A compost heap is a great way to put kitchen waste to good use. Around 50% of our garbage comes from food and garden waste. By throwing food and garden waste in the bin, important organic nutrients end up being wasted in landfills. These landfills contribute to the greenhouse effect and water pollution.

Instead of throwing food and garden waste in the bin, we should be taking advantage of the organic nutrients they supply by turning them into compost.

Create a Worm Farm

A similar idea to the compost heap, a worm farm is a great organic alternative to throwing out kitchen waste. Worms like to eat food wastes like vegetable and fruit peelings, pulp (from the juicer), tea bags, crushed egg shells, and bread.

Worm farms can be made from small boxes, so they're ideal for apartments. Typical dimensions for a worm farm is around 30cm deep, and 60cm wide by 90cm long.

Grow your own Vegetables

There's nothing like eating your own, organically grown vegetables! As well as being a healthy, organic alternative to buying your veges, growing your own can save you lots of money.

Even if you live in a small house or an apartment, you can still grow your own vegetables. You can grow vegetables in a box, or other container. If you're interested in growing container vegetables, there is plenty of information around that can help get you started. Growing container vegetables is quite common.

Buy Organic Products

Even if you grow your own fruit and vegetables, there's still a high chance that you will need to purchase vegetables from time to time. When you do, try to find organically grown product.

Apart from fruit and vegetables, there are many packaged products that can been made organically. Often what this means is that, they have been made from real food and don't contain preservatives and other chemicals. These products often taste superior and can be much more healthy for you.

Although they do tend to be more expensive, organic food is certainly worth the investment. After all, you are what you eat!

Use Recycled Products

These days, there are plenty of products available that are made from recycled materials. When choosing between multiple products, try to pick one that is made from recycled materials.

Also, try to avoid items with packaging, or at least, too much packaging. And if it must be packaged, try to pick products with recycled packaging. Some manufacturers provide a little recycled icon on their products' packages to indicate that its made from recycled materials.

Avoid the Car

Try not to drive the car everywhere. Even better, try not to drive the car anywhere. Even better still, avoid buying a car.

Instead of driving the car, walk or ride your bike. By walking or cycling, you help the environment by keeping the air clean. If you take the car, you pollute the environment with your car's exhaust fumes.
