How to Measure your Household’s Energy Consumption

If you’ve read my article about standby power, you’ll know that most households burn through much more electricity than they really need. Most electrical devices actually draw electricity even when you’ve switched them off!

Following on from that, there’s now an easy way to find out exactly how much energy those appliances are using.

EnerJar, the do-it-yourself power meter, enables you to accurately measure your household’s energy consumption. You simply plug it into a power outlet, then plug your device into the EnerJar.

Although I’ve seen a commercial product that does the same thing, the EnerJar is a do-it-yourself product. The idea behind EnerJar is that, you can take the design, and change it, to build your own version.

EnerJar is the Grand Prize Winner of the Greener Gadgets Design Competition 2008. You can also learn more about the EnerJar from the EnerJar website.
