True saying that they don’t just decompose automatically though - they need the right conditions to decompose. To decompose properly, a biodegradable plastic bag should be composted. It should not be sent to landfill, as it may contribute to methane emissions. Degradable plastic bags decompose due to a chemical additive to oxygen, light or heat and are best suited to landfill. Degradable bags are also referred to as “oxo degradable” bags.

Roplast Industries makes large, thick, reusable plastic bags. They contain more plastic than the flimsy, single-use bags, but in the long-term, says Roplast President Robert Bateman, they're better for the environment. The company's bag "will hold five or six times as much as the standard disposable bag," he says. "And it is reusable. It can dramatically change the amount of plastic used." The plastics industry said it would sue on environmental grounds. Sharon Kneiss of the American Chemistry Council says that, by banning plastic, Fair fax was giving a tacit endorsement to use paper bags, which could hurt the environment. Thanks for sharing…

I am in the bag business and owner at http://www.BagsOnTheNet.com and people inside the industry and out for the most part know how to be kind to the planet. I do find it sad that more people don’t think to recycle their plastic bags. I offer biodegradable plastic bags, but when you’re on the phone with a shop owner and they do ask on how to be green, they do not go for the up charge for the biodegradable film. I do sell, but don’t love the non-woven polypropylene bags “eco-bags” that everyone is using and selling at the grocery stores. The main reason is because of the lack of polypropylene recycling facilities in the U.S. so that means they will sit in land fill or have to go far distances to get recycled, and for overall carbon footprint, not my favorite. Paper, personally is a good choice. You can buy them made from recycled content. For the high end shops, you can do the corded handle Shoppers (Euro-Tote) NON-Laminated (must be non-laminated) with a natural cotton handle. They will break down 100% or they can be totally recycled including the cotton going into the paper pulp. I hope this is informative and I know my personal choice is subjective.

Biodegradable plastic and packaging is a modern necessity for our ever-endangered environment.
Now PLA has been used to line the indoors of Paper Cups in place of the oil based lining additional usually used, create Plastic Cups, Plates, Carrier Bags, Food Packaging and even Nappies.
Eco Pure is our proprietary blend of organic materials that does not modify the base resin to which it is added.

Thanks a lot for your information

Great points, degradable plastic is NOT eco-friendly, and only biodegradable plastic bags that contain no plastic are truly eco-friendly. They're costly to the consumer but they're environmentally friendly.

For those of you not yet compositing but looking for an alternative to regular plastic garbage bags, I have a recommendation. The company I represent, Jig-A-Loo, has recently introduced a new line of plastic bags called EconoGreen that are made from:
100% recycled plastic
100% oxodegradable
100% recyclable.

These EconoGreen bags and drop cloths contain an additive that will completely break down within 2 years after use. Considerably less than traditional plastic bags and especially grocery bags that we often use as garbage bags.

For more information, visit our Jig-A-Loo website!
