Global Warming = Melting Glaciers

Did you know there’s a glacier on every continent and in 47 countries?

Well, I should have said, “as I write this there’s a glacier on every continent and in 47 countries”. I should have said this because glaciers are retreating at an alarming rate. And some glaciers, such as the Lewis Glacier (North Cascades, WA USA), have recently disappeared completely.

Glaciers have always been known to grow in cooler times and retreat in warmer times. For example, glaciers grew between 1550 and 1850, which was a time where the earth was much cooler. And between 1850 and 1940, glaciers actually retreated as the planet heated up and glacier ice melted. Glaciers then grew again between 1950 and 1980 as the planet cooled down again.

But ever since 1980, glaciers have been retreating at a much faster rate. And what’s worse, this rate has increased substantially since 1995. Global warming is melting glaciers out of existence.

The attached photo is of Franz Josef Glacier, New Zealand. Franz Josef Glacier retreated several kilometers between the 1940s and 1980s, although it has grown recently mainly due to heavy snow.
